Mazda 2 was named South Africa Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the year amidst stiff competition from Corolla, Honda CRV and big names such as Mercedes and Lexus.

As if that was not enough, the car won the world title as well. In this one it beat the powerful Audi R8 and the new Mercedes C class.

The winning Mazda was one of two Mazda models nominated to take part in 23rd competition.

To find out which car was the best, the finalists were put through rigorous evaluation for three days by a 28-member jury at the Gerotek's vehicle testing facility near Pretoria. The jury assessed them to determine the benchmarks they set for their respective classes.

According to iafrica.com, Dynamic ability, performance, safety, engineering quality, technological innivation, styling and comfort were among the factors considered, along with value for money, running costs, fuel economy and emission standards.

Principal Dealer, Mazda/Ford at Barloworld Motor, Tunku Motsumi said that they are happy with this development. "Normally, when a car is voted car of the year, it becomes easier to sell. People begin to see it as a trusty worthy car. It is put through stiff competition against the tough."
