Jazz Brew Beer Garden and Pub in Mochudi will tomorrow mark a new chapter in local music when it hosts the first jazz photography exhibition.

Sponsored by the Department of Youth and Culture and dubbed "Our Indigenous Jazz Heritage", the exhibition is coordinated by Diphalana Publishers with the support of Streethorn Promotions.

The historic exhibition will hopefully add colour to the Lister Boleseng concert, which is billed for the same venue tomorrow afternoon.

Speaking to The Voice, Diphalana Managing Director Onkemetse Clark, who is a writer, publisher, poet, and visual artist, said he conceived the idea two years ago.

"In 2006, I invited some friends to Bokaa where we had an all night jam session to celebrate my son's third birthday. We had a lot of fun and I got the inspiration to do a photo exhibition on local jazz. I threw the idea to the guys and they seemed interested then. As time went by they all seemed to lose interest but I continued and started working on the pictures. I am happy my thought has become a reality that will hopefully get people to understand the history of our jazz."

For his part, Streethorn boss, Soares Katumbela, who is one of the leading local jazz promoters, said: "This is a very important event in our music history. This is a very good and important concept. With public support it can grow bigger. It will do a lot in capturing our jazz history."

The exhibition, which will run for two weeks, will feature pictures of present and past jazz musicians. Amongst the notables whose pictures will be on display are Ndingo Johwa, Shanti Lo, Lister Boleseng, Abraxas Jazz Combo, Soccer Moruakgomo, Punah Gabasime and Nnunu.

The dead will also not be forgotten and images of the Mister Brown and Duncan Senyatso will remind jazz lovers of two artists who are credited with pioneering and leading the development of local Jazz.

In another development, Street Horn has invited notable local musicians to the event and revellers are likely to be treated to interesting jams as the organizers intend to get the musicians to play when Lister Boleseng, who will be performing at Jazz Brew on the day, takes a break. Amongst those who have made the invitation list are guitarists Clement Jackson, Cyril Ndolo, drummers Enoch Mbewe, Makhwengwe Mengwe, keyboardist Lekofi Sejeso, singer Shanti Lo and many other notables.

"We sincerely hope these artists will agree to jam and add to the entertainment value of the event. This will also be a chance for the younger and older artists to play together and exchange ideas whilst giving the people the music they love."

John Selolwane, who has recorded and performed with Paul Simon and Hugh Masekela, will give a talk on the history of local jazz.

Entrance is P20.00 and the programme starts at 12 noon with speeches from officials of the Department of Youth and Culture, Soares Katumbela and Clark.
