Francistown — Recently, I heard an interesting comment on local radio asking listeners to explain, on air, what was the difference between 'loving' somebody and being 'in love' with them?
Well you may know but I'm not here to answer such conundrums! But then last week I thought about the word 'love' when reading in the international tabloid press the fascinating story of Paul McCartney, one of the world's richest men, and the troubled financial agreement between him and Heather Mills when their short marriage came to an end.
Ms. Mills was claiming well over 125 Million Pounds from the ex Beatle to which Sir Paul was prepared to offer far less. But then you may wonder why a man with a fortune estimated at over 400 million Pounds, and perhaps even much more, depending on your sources, finds himself in this awkward position? Why did he not sign a pre-nuptial agreement like other Hollywood types was the obvious question from the lawyers asked to give opinion on the settlement? Why indeed you might ask? Well, in old-fashioned terms it was, I suspect, merely a question of 'love'. No doubt he was probably advised otherwise behind closed accountants doors but the belief in love clearly over-rode any other scenarios that may have arisen! It does not make sense, agreed, but that is what all kinds of people, throughout the world do at such times and clearly Sir Paul was no different! Love comes first, and well before many other common sense issues, and I suppose that's how it should be!
Anyway their love match must have fallen on stony ground for one reason or another?
But then Sir Paul, by all counts, is not your typical superstar having no security guards and a rather modest lifestyle where, it is reported, he prefers to eat in and watch the TV rather than be seen by those ever-present 'photographers' around town. Anyway Ms Mills was having none of this so that when the issue went to court, Sir Paul was quick to discover that apparently without Ms Mills his life was rather meaningless since she had become his unofficial business partner, confidant, and general shoulder to cry on-all because of that little thing called 'love'. Fortunately, the judge saw it otherwise and while Ms. Mills preferred to offer her own court defense (not presumably trusting or prepared to pay others more experienced at such task), she was marked down as being rather above her station and living a kind of fantasy where her imagination frequently got the better of the stark realities of life. And while she continued to run the guy down as the biggest son-of-a-bitch in the world, through it all Sir Paul kept his dignity by saying nothing presumably again out of respect for others and that little thing called 'love'. Anyway however you look at it, Ms. Mills went from struggling part-time actress and topless model to multi millionaire, almost over night, just because of that little thing called 'love!
