Ethiopia: HIV/Aids Workplace Policy Launched for More Than 35 NGOs

Addis Ababa — An HIV/AIDS workplace policy was launched to be implimted by 0ver 35 Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Ethiopia.

The policy was the result of a three-year project "HIV and AIDS workplace policy Project for NGOs in Ethiopia" under the slogan Stop AIDS Now! (SAN) was hosted by the Jerusalem Children and Community Development Organization JeCCDO.

The project emphasizes on building the internal capacities of more than 35 Local and International Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), to formulate and implement HIV and AIDS workplace policy and manage its impact.

Speaking at the launch of the project at the Global Hotel on Saturday, Dereje Alemayehu, Steering committee member, SAN Ethiopia, said the project was designed to address the growing realization by organizations in Ethiopia of the need to respond to the HIV and AIDS problem at workplace level. The project is derived from the need to tackle the alarming rate at which HIV is spreading in.

The plan also addresses the high rates of infection projection for 2008 that shows the majority of people living with HIV to be between the ages of 15-45 indicating effects on the working population.

He said the project will address some of the major difficulties that organizations in Ethiopia are facing predominantly through giving capacity support in HIV and AIDS internal mainstreaming.

The project, along with encouraging effective implementation of prevention programmes that help to curb the spread of the virus, also aims at using various tools and techniques to create awareness and knowledge on how to effectively address HIV and AIDS in the workplace, Dereje added.

SAN! Has been implementing similar HIV and AIDS work place project in Uganda and India. The project in Ethiopia hosted by Jerusalem Children and Community Development organization (JeCCDO) who is among the seven NGOs that serve as members of project steering group and a non for profit non governmental indigenous organization that was established in 1985.
