On Monday 31 March, 2008, eighty-eight (88) accused persons, all residents of Makumbaya were arraigned before Magistrate E. F M'bai of the Brikama Magistrate Court, amidst tight security.
All the accused persons have pleaded not guilty to three count criminal charges preferred against them by the prosecution.
On count one, the accused persons are charged with committing arson at Babylon village in the Kombo North. They are alleged to have set fire on the said village.
On count two, the accused persons are charged with arming themselves in public with cutlass, sticks etc. On count three, the accused persons are alleged to have conspired together in committing felony.
According to the particulars of the preferred three counts, the said offences were committed on Sunday 30 March, 2008, in an unlawful and willful manner.
After the accused person pleaded not guilty, the prosecutor, ASP Camara, stood up and applied for a reasonable adjournment in order to enable him to come up with his witnesses. ASP Camara further applied for the accused persons to be remanded until the next adjourned date. ASP Camara said the accused persons are facing serious charges and that investigations are yet to be completed. He noted that if the accused persons are granted bail, they could tamper with the progress of the investigation,

The presiding Magistrate later ruled that the accused persons be remanded in custody until 7 April, 2008. "No matter how the grievances, people should not take the law in their own hands," Magistrate M'bai remarked.
