Monrovia — The James R. Davis Memorial Baptist Church has broken ground for the construction of a school building on the Terminal Island, now Peugeot Garage, Bushrod Island, near Freeport of Monrovia.

Construction works on the estimated US$80,000 project is expected to begin later this month.

The school would contain twelve classrooms, administrative offices and a hall.

Performing the groundbreaking ceremony recently, the Mayor of the City of Monrovia, Madam Ophelia Hoff Saytumah lauded the church for the construction of a school in an area that was once a hide-out for hardened criminals.

She said the initiation of such project was timely especially at this time when there is a dire need for more educational institutions to develop the minds of the youths who have been victimized by war.

Also speaking, the Project Coordinator Henry Coleman said the church has decided to construct the school to religiously educate children of the community and make them productive citizens.

He said one of the motives behind the construction project is to transform the lifestyles of the youth, some of whom are offsprings of those criminals who once lived on the Terminal Island.

He said upon completion the school would not only offer academic studies but it would also provide vocational training.

Coleman said vocational education would enable students to sustain themselves.

The groundbreaking ceremony was climaxed by a fund raising rally intended to assist the church reach the targeted amount for the construction of the school.
