3 April 2008

Luanda — The foundation stone for the construction of the new Harbour of Luanda, at Dande Bay, to the north of the country's capital, will be laid this year, guaranteed Wednesday here the minister of Transport, André Luís Brandão.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Third Consultative Council of the Harbour of Luanda, the official stressed that in terms of size the future port shall be twice as bigger that the current harbour of Luanda, since, according to studies carried out, shall have 32 mooring of ships, to the contrary of the current 15.

André Luís Brandão said that the government considered the construction of the new Port of Luanda to meet the country's demands, resulting from the economic growth being registered, therefore the reason why the infrastructure shall have its own characteristics and greater capacity compared to the current port.

Apart from the construction of the new harbour, the minister stressed the need of paying more attention to the project of development and modernising the current harbour, to meet the current challenges, relating to the rehabilitation of infrastructures and to the economic growth.

According to the government official, the country faces a series of tasks linked to national reconstruction and reconciliation, consolidation of democracy and to economic growth, and the harbours are an entry passage of all merchandises and raw materials that are serving to support this desire, a reason why the government elaborated a programme of modernising these infrastructures.

To the minister, the Port of Luanda currently receives 80% of merchandises imported into the country and returns to this demand are not always given at a favourable period.

The 3rd Consultative Council of the Harbour of Luanda ended Wednesday and analysed, among other aspects, the general organisational evolution of the port, expansion works, improvement of the access to harbours and the perspectives relating to the evolution of the harbour.
