Kampala — THE district has launched a campaign to make Kalyankoko Landing Site a model village in health and sanitation. Located on Lake Wamala in Maanyi sub-county, the landing site has been one of the worst in sanitation. This is why the district health department selected it.
The Maanyi sub-county LC3 chairman, Leonard Ntambi, said the people suffered an outbreak of dysentery last year, due to poor hygiene and sanitation.
"The biggest percentage of people never had pit latrines, so we sensitised them on the importance of latrines," Ntambi said.
The district LC5 chairman, Joseph Musoke, said Kalyanko will be a learning point for people on other landing sites and villages.
Residents said they are worried about water scarcity, despite their proximity to the lake.
The Kalyankoko Lugabo LC1 chairman, Luka Muyizi, said over 300 families use one borehole, which breaks down often.
"Added to that, there are a lot of termites which destroy the material we use to construct pit latrines. As a result, they collapse," Muyozi said at the launch of the project last week.
At the same function, the district Woman MP, Sylvia Namabidde, commissioned a borehole at Kalyankoko.
