Nigeria: Maternal Mortality - UNICEF Meets 10 States

Abakaliki — United Nations Children Emergency Fund, UNICEF, A-Field Office, Enugu has concluded arrangements to hold a meeting with secretaries to 10 state governments in South-east and South-south.

The meeting is meant to draw attention of governments of the zones to issues of maternal and child mortality, as well as other issues that affect women and children.

The one-day meeting, which is being planned in collaboration with Ebonyi State office of Secretary to the State Government, is expected to come up tomorrow and would also attract participation of other key functionaries. A release signed by Mrs Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe , UNICEF A-Field Officer for Information, Media and External Relations and made available to THISDAY in Abakaliki, named the 10 states as, Abia, Anambra, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo and Rivers. She said Dr Robert Limili, Deputy Representative of UNICEF Nigeria, Abuja , Mrs Pelucy Ntambirweki, UNICEF Chief of A-Field Office and Assistant Representative, will be participating.

The release also said the Zonal Networking for children in UNICEF A-Field Office is a forum that has existed for over three years, under which auspice, UNICEF and partners meet to assess the rate of survival for children in the 10 states of the zone.

She said the forum is tailored to position stakeholders to forge and articulate possible ways to help meet their basic needs and expand their opportunities to reach their full potentials.
