Cameroon: NW Governor Cautions Regional Public Contracts Director

3 April 2008

Northwest Governor, Abakar Ahamat, has cautioned the new Regional Director of Public Contracts Regulatory Agency, ARMP, for the Northwest and West Provinces, Georges Daniel Moussongui Fils, to stamp out all forms of corruption, intrigues and embezzlement.

Speaking at Moussongui's installation on Thursday, March 27, at the Provincial Delegation of Planning and Regional Development, Abakar said if Moussongui wants to receive the wrath of the state, let him promote vices such as embezzlement, corruption and non-respect of rules governing public contracts.

The Governor urged Moussongui to be assiduous, punctual and to create a conducive environment for his staff and collaborators, and to ensure that state revenue is not wasted.

The General Director of Public Contracts Regulatory Board, Jean-Jacques Ndodomu, said access to information on what ARMP does and how contracts are awarded is now available.

While promising to give the new regional boss his total support, he urged contractors and those using ARMP services to promptly pay their dues as required by the state treasury.

In a press briefing, Moussongui said the task ahead is not going to be easy because the two provinces he has to cover are too large. He said he would in the days ahead put in place strategies to combat corruption.

"I am assuring the population of these two provinces that I will work diligently to merit their confidence and to that of the Head of State. All vices shall be checked and the sanctions that follow such crimes strictly respected. I am never associated with failure," Moussongui remarked.

As to what their aspirations are, an ARMP staff, Mrs.Patricia Ngum, said they are optimistic to receive a young energetic young man who is knowledgeable as far as public contracts issues are concerned.

"He needs only our collaboration which is reciprocal and we are going to support him in all his endeavours for our Province to develop," said Mrs. Ngum. The installation of the new Director comes at a time when work has resumed on most abandoned projects like the giant Finance building on the Ayaba road, former Governor's office and residence, Provincial Delegation of Secondary Education and the Appeal Court building, Up-station.

In a review on how public investment projects were executed last year, Northwest Governor revealed that 96 percent of the proposals were well executed and praised the Province for being on top in executing contracts.
