Liberia: 20 Die in Accident in Lofa

3 April 2008

Reports say that 20 persons have been killed and several others injured in a motor accident in Fatu Village, near Zorzor, Lofa County.

According to reports, the accident occurred when the driver of a black Guinean truck marked RC1498E in which they were riding reportedly swerved off the road and fell into a valley.

They said the accident happened when the driver of the truck carrying assorted goods, Lusene Kamara, attempted to dodge "something."

They said it was while in that process that he lost control of his steering and went into the valley. However, the report did not say what the driver was trying to dodge.

When contacted yesterday, Police Chief of Traffic, Miekee Gray, confirmed the accident and said that the 20 persons have been "confirmed dead" and that 17 of the dead have been identified, while the remaining three are yet to be identified.

The Traffic Chief said 10 of the occupants, including the driver survived the accident. He said seven of the survivors were treated and discharged, while the other three are receiving treatment at a hospital in Voinjama.
