Cameroon: FCFA 5 Million Raised for Chomba Technical College

Chris Mbunwe

3 April 2008

The elite of Chomba village situated a few kilometres from Bamenda have raised FCFA 5 million for the construction of classrooms for the newly created Government Technical College.

Speaking during the 27th Annual General Assembly of the Chomba Development and Cultural Association, CHODECA, Fon Martin Forbuzie Asanji Buzie, thanked the women who sacrificed their farmlands for the construction of the school and promised to resettle them elsewhere.

For easy administration, Fon Forbuzie said he would continue to decentralise by creating more quarter heads. Concerning the fund raising, he said the Chomba people made him proud by donating generously for the construction of the school and other vital projects.

For his part, CHODECA President General, Prof. Moses Fon Asanji, expressed regret that last year CHODECA lost 11,250 medicinal plants to fire.He recalled that some reckless grasshopper catchers plunged Chomba village into a blackout for two months because of their misuse of electricity.

Asanji also regretted that only a few Chomba elite in the Diaspora contributed to the development of Chomba.Said he: "We are highly disappointed with our sons and daughters in the Diaspora. But for a few; Dr. Fidelis Cho-Ngwa and Dr. Valentine Ngwa, the rest are not interested to see Chomba developed."

He said even if the Chombas in the Diaspora have nothing to contribute, they can at least solicit assistance for development from their homeland from international agencies.Despite the odds, CHODECA recorded the following achievements; construction of roads and handing over of community school to government among others.

Projects envisaged include extension of electricity and water supply, construction of health centres and opening of new roads. The Mayor of Bamenda II Council, Fidelis Balick Awah pledged to support the construction of the new GTC Chomba with council support funds.

Created this academic year, GTC Chomba has 102 students in four disciplines; Accounting, Motor Mechanics, Electricity and Building Construction.
