Cameroon: NSO Cultural Week Resurfaces After a Decade

A cultural bonanza, "Ngonnso 2008 Cultural Festival", has been programmed to kick off in Kumbo, Bui Divisional headquarters on Friday, April 4.

The week-long cultural bonanza is expected to show case the rich culture and tradition of the Nso people.According to John Bosco Mbinkar Ahidjo, one of the secretaries of the communication committee of the festival, the Nso cultural week was last organised in 1996.

Explaining the raison d'être of the cultural week, Mbinkar quotes one-time Fon of Nso and initiator of the occasion, late Fon Ngah Bifon I: "The cultural week is an attempt to explain to our children and the people of the world where we are, who we are and what our tribe can offer."

Although the cultural week has hitherto been known simply as "Ngam Lii Wong", the organisers explain that it will henceforth be referred to as the "Ngonnso Cultural Festival". This, they explain is to pay tribute to Ngonnso, a woman believed to be the founder of the Nso queendom.

Culture Minister Ama Tutu Muna, who in March 2003 was honoured with the traditional title Ya Yefon (Queen Fon's Mother) our translation, is expected to preside at the opening ceremony.

At press time, it was not yet clear if the Minister would honour the request, but Nso sons and daughters including other top government officials and diplomats are expected to witness the occasion that will also offer much in the tourism sector.

According to the programme released by the communication committee, highlights will include, a Nso youth march for culture, visits to shrines, rituals, masquerade displays, dances and the election of Miss Ngonnso.
