Cameroon: NGO Sensitises Youths for 2011 Presidential Elections

A Limbe-based NGO, Cameroon Association of Media Professionals, CAMP, has launched a campaign in Fako Division to rally youths to vote during the 2011 presidential polls.

The campaign consists of a training programme sponsored by the US Embassy in Cameroon.

CAMP Director, Taryang Tabe, told the press on March 18 that the campaign was the result of a research they carried out across Fako, which indicated that youths have been keeping away from elections.

"66.7 percent of youths in Fako, from our studies, have not been taking part in elections," Taryang said.He said they interviewed some 1000 youths on their voter participation in the last elections, with Idenau and Muyuka recording a high level of participation with an average of 47 and 49 percent respectively.

But the level of participation in Tiko, Limbe and Buea was dismal with Buea registering the lowest participation rate of 25 percent.Among other reasons, Taryang said rigging, lack of voters' cards and fear of being brutalised impeded youth participation in elections.

CAMP hopes to educate the youths about the electoral process and their fundamental rights to vote, since most of them lack information. The CAMP Director said the training would go on in Fako this year and in 2009, they intend to cover the rest of the Province and go national in 2010.
