Monrovia — The University of Liberia Agriculture Women Cooperative (ULAWC) will tomorrow hold a one-day agriculture harvest day program on the UL Fendall Campus of the University of Liberia.
During the program, which will start at 10:00 a.m., will also be characterized with the official launching of ULAWC first agriculture project. The project is a six-acre of land cultivated by the organization to demonstrate its commitment in meeting the goals for which, the organization was established. Crops such as watermelon, okra, cucumber, cassava, and corn are being cultivated on the land.
A statement from the organization, the project and initiative of ULAWC to launch the project and hold the harvest, is part of the vision of the organization to buttress government's effort in its poverty reduction strategy by engaging in agricultural research, seeds multiplication, extension, production and marketing of some basic products on the local markets.
ULAWC said its focus is to direct economic growth that empowers citizens through equal opportunities, especially with the aim of giving female college students the opportunity to be trained in modern agricultural technology that would set the stage for the country to shift from subsistence farming to a culture of self reliance through mechanize farming.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf would be expected to serve as the Chief Launcher, while Deputy Agriculture Minister for Technical Services, Lwopu G. Kandakai, would serve as Co- Launcher.
Others invited to grace the occasion are Agriculture Minister, Chris Toe, the Head of UNMIL Environmental and Resource Unit, Webby Bwanali, Firestone Liberia, the German Agro Action, FAO, Senator John Ballout of Maryland County among others.
