Monrovia — The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has received seven containers containing seven diesel generator sets and other materials for phase two of the emergency Power program (EPP).
According to LEC Managing Director, Mr. Harry T. Yuan, Sr., the equipment were accompanied by mechanical and civil engineers from Norway to assist with the installation process.
He said the seven containers are part of 22 containers that would boost Liberia's electricity program.
Mr. Yuan said the installation of these additional generators and other equipment will expand electricity to other parts of Monrovia including Bushrod Island.
Addressing a news conference in Monrovia yesterday, Mr. Yuan said these generators would increase LEC customers' base and that the second phase of the Emergency Power Program(EPP), which was launched in 2006, following the signing of a Memorandum of understanding(MOU) between the European Union, the United States Government through USAID, the Royal Government of Norway through the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the World Bank and the Liberian Government through the LEC amount to US$25.2 Million. He said it is expected to expand LEC's services to the Liberian people.
Managing Director Yuan assured the Liberian people that the government will continue to engage its international partners to improve the quality of the lives of Liberians, such as making available electricity for the general public.
Mr. Yuan thanked Liberia's international partners for standing with the government and the people of Liberia in the country's reconstruction process.
The Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy, Mr. Eugene Shannon praised the Norwegian government for its tremendous contribution in the power supply program.
He disclosed further that he would be going to Norway this month to discuss other aspects relative to electricity generation in Liberia.
He said that there is already a solar system in Bong County that is helping with power generation and expresses the hope that Norway would do more for Liberia.
