Liberia: Robbers Attack Inquirer Editor

4 April 2008

Monrovia — The war between armed robbers and unarmed civilians seems to be far from ceasefire. This manifested itself yesterday when the Sub Editor of The Inquirer, Patrick Wrokpoh was violently attacked by armed men while en route home to his Bushrod Island residence.

A group of armed desperados numbering over five attacked The Inquirer's Editor just about 11: 30 p.m. while the paper was about to get to the press.

As soon as Mr., Wrokpoh left the offices after supervising the paper's daily production, and heading towards the interception of Benson and Gurley Streets, the armed men festooned with cutlasses and other deadly objects, rushed to him and pulled out their arms and machetes demanding him (Mr. Wrokpoh) to surrender his mobile phone and other personal belongings.

The criminals, in the process, forcibly took away Mr. Wrokpoh's mobile phone after subduing him and hitting him in the mouth thereby sustaining a cut in his mouth.

The armed men also took way an amount of LD $ 5,000.00, which according to Mr. Wrokpoh, he withdrew from a local bank earlier yesterday to purchase some commodities for a domestic project.

The incident happened as a misery to some staff of The Inquirer whom Mr. Wrokpoh had bid good night only to hear that he had been armed robbed around the intersection of Gurley and Benson Streets from the Gurley Street offices of the paper towards Broad Street.

Meanwhile, some passersby and the Inquirer staff who rushed to the scene on a rescue mission attempted to apprehend the criminals but, they escape to their hide-out commonly known as Gbablah behind the Ministry of National Defense on Benson Street.

The passersby who went to rescue Mr. Wrokpoh during the incident blamed the situation to darkness meaning the lack of adequate electricity and fragile security.
