Mozambique's ruling Frelimo party has rejected the offer made by an opposition politician to defect to Frelimo, if the party runs him as its candidate for mayor of the southern town of Vilankulo in this year's local elections.
Manuel Nguluve was once the Vilankulo political delegate of the former rebel movement Renamo. He was also once the Inhambane provincial commander of the traffic police.
His "offer" to switch parties and become the Frelimo candidate for mayor was accompanied by the threat that if Frelimo turned him down, he would stand as an independent. But the figures from the last municipal elections, held in 2003, show that the Frelimo candidate, Sulemane Amugy, won with about 89 per cent of the vote. Thus Frelimo needs no assistance from anybody else to win elections in this part of the country.
Cited in Friday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias", the Frelimo first secretary in Inhambane province, Felisberto Machava said "within Frelimo, we have no shortage of cadres to run as candidates for mayors or for the Municipal Assemblies. At the due time and place we will announce who our candidates are for these posts".
Machava praised the work done by Amugy at the head of the Vilankulo Municipal Council. He said the mayor has been performing with zeal and dedication. Amugy had been implementing his election manifesto in concrete actions, which have been changing for the better the quality of life of Vilankulo residents.
"Manuel Nguluve is free to come back to the Frelimo party, just like many others who joined other opposition parties and who are also returning to us from all over Inhambane province", said Machava. "Within Frelimo there is a place for all those who identify themselves with the party's statutes and programmes, but there is no place for the ambitious who want to come to power at all costs".

So far, Amugy has not yet disclosed whether he wishes to stand for a further term of office.
