Angola: Government to Asphalt Over 4,000 Kilometres of Road

About 4,835 kilometres of road infrastructures shall be rehabilitated definitively this year by the Angolan government, in light of its Special Programme of Rehabilitating National Roads, which was approved by the Cabinet Council in the second half of 2005.
The programmed already enabled the asphalting of 1,259 kilometres of main roads until last March.
At the moment 2,400 kilometres of roads are being recovered, and arte expected to be concluded in the year 2009.
According to the programme of the Roads Institute of Angola, delivered to ANGOP on Saturday, the first works were entrusted in the framework of the emergency plan for the 2003/2005 triennium, so as to restore road circulation in the whole country, foreseeing to boost the main economic activities, such as agriculture, trade and industry.
As a whole, the works entrusted during the first six years of peace, involve 8,494 kilometres of roads in various provinces and urban infrastructures in Luanda province, which aimed at improving road circulation of the country's capital, considering the chaotic state of its road network.
Until last March, 13 definitive bridges were built, 34 metallic were installed and 400 other are underway.
The programme of rehabilitating road infrastructures brought various social benefits to the neighbouring countries.
The implementation of the programme generated over 8,000 direct jobs and 4,000 indirect until 2006 and, in 2007 with infrastructure works of Luanda the number now exceeds 16,000 direct jobs.
In general this programme is being covered by over 50 construction companies, being 29 national and 25 foreign firms. This also includes 22 supervising companies, from which 14 are Angolan.

The implementation of the process of recovering road infrastructures is under the responsibility of the Roads Institute of Angola (INEA), whilst owned by the Public Works Ministry.
