Liberia: Vice President Boakai Challenges Lofans to Grow Food

Liberia's Vice President, Joseph N. Boakai has challenged citizens of Lofa County to strive for self-sufficiency in food production and reclaim the title of 'Liberia's bread basket'.
He said Lofans should grow enough food, not only to feed themselves, but other political sub-divisions of Liberia.
Vice President Boakai made the request during visits to the seven districts of Lofa County. The visit which lasted from March 24 to April 2, took the Liberian Vice President and his delegation to Salayea, Zorzor, Voinjama, Kolahun, Foya, Vahun and Quardu Gboni Districts.
He said no nation can boast of being truly independent if she cannot feed herself, and assured that the Unity Party-led government would support farmers with the wherewithal to engage in sustainable agriculture.
He informed residents of Foya District that a company will shortly begin mechanized farming in rice producing areas like theirs, and that this was intended to make Liberia self sufficient in food as prices of food commodities skyrocket on the World Market.
He said it was obvious that all parts of Liberia were severely devastated during the country's protracted civil conflict, but emphasized that the government was committed to improving the lives of Liberians.
He said roads would be rehabilitated to ensure that markets are easily accessible to farmers to enable them sell their produce.
He also disclosed that plans were underway for Ecobank to establish a branch in Foya, and for the government to facilitate the re-establishment of farmers' cooperatives in Lofa County.
The Vice President then expressed thanks and appreciation to the people of Lofa County for the overwhelming support they gave the Unity Party during the 2005 presidential election, and promised that as a government, they were under oath to empower Liberians to get over the trauma of the war.
During his tour of Lofa Counhty, Vice President Boakai, accompanied by Superintendent Galakpai Kortimai, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Fofi Baimba and officials of the various districts, dedicated market buildings, schools, women's centers and bridges. He also inspected several clinics and the multi-million dollar oil palm mill in Mendigisua, Foya District.

In Foya District, Vice President Boakai met with youths and women to brainstorm on how they want to grapple with the reconstruction program in their district.
I am not from Lofa but i admire you guys so much. I am so proud of the hard work that you all are doing.Food is what keeps people going and that is what you all are doing.I hope the other counties will learn from you all instead of listening to those politicans that are talking about cheap rice. Rice is our stable food and it should be surplus on the market.Many thanks to the leadership of Lofa County and God will continue to bless your work.Best of luck to all Liberians.
