Zimbabwe: Veteran Musicians Blame Media

Patience Nyangove

5 April 2008

Harare — Some veteran musicians have accused the media for fuelling the "feud" between sungura musicians Alick Macheso and Tongai Moyo.

Gospel musician Lawrence Haisa said that Macheso and Moyo had no problems between themselves until the "unholy" media came in between the award-winning musicians.

"You people are the ones who are making Macheso and Moyo fight each other simply because you want to sell your newspapers. What you journalists are doing is really bad and the Lord will deal with you appropriately. "Look at Tongai he is a sick man but instead of being sympathetic towards him all you do is attack a helpless man, I really wonder what kind of people you are," a fuming Haisa said. Hosiah Chipanga said although the media's duty was to inform the public it had however exaggerated the Macheso/Moyo feud.

"The truth as I see is you the media are the mouthpiece of the people and your duty is to inform and entertain as well expose people who do bad things in society but I believe you have exaggerated the "beef" between Macheso and Moyo. While it might be true that Moyo and Macheso have had minor disagreements you have blown the whole situation out of proportion," Chipanga said.

Madzibaba Nicholas Zacharia said although the media was not fully responsible for fuelling the grudge between Macheso and Moyo he accused it of writing incorrect stories based on misinformed sources. "To be honest with you I am a Christian and therefore I am not supposed to lie. If you remember quite well I once pleaded with you to be objective when writing the Macheso/Moyo story because some of your sources have been misleading you through giving you wrong information simply because they either have a bone of contention with Moyo or Macheso.

"It's not like you are knowingly trying to increase the grudge between the two musicians but you are getting information from the wrong people. I have talked to Tongai and Macheso and both of them testify that there is no bad blood between them and they don't know where you (media) are getting your information from. "You should seek the truth, because some people are lying to you, you are being made to do something wrong unknowingly.

Although you are 100 percent right because you are doing your job some of your informers are using you to get even with these musicians," Madzibaba Zacharia said.
