Uganda: Besigye to Bow Out of 2011 Elections

5 April 2008

Kampala — AFTER weeks of debate and scenario analysis, leaks from FDC have it that the party will formally announce that Dr. Kizza Besigye will not be the presidential candidate in 2011.

The cat jumped out of the bag at a pub in Bweyogerere, where some party members were downing beer that loosened their tongues. It didn't need pricked up ears to follow the conversations.

The small group excitedly revealed what might be the party's secrets oblivious of revellers who went silent to pick the juicy conversation. Probably to tap in on the political talk, the barman lowered the volume on the music system.

From the discussion, it emerged that the party's top echelon has prevailed over Besigye not to vie for the post as party presidential candidate again. One of the officials ridiculed the party leaders, saying: "Colonel Ajja genda (the colonel will bow out)."

Besigye coined the Ajja genda slogan during the 2001 and 2006 presidential elections to refer to the end of President Yoweri Museveni's reign.
