Ethiopia: Construction Companies Boost Competency in Int'l Market

Ethiopian construction companies, guided by UCBP, an Ethiopian-German capacity building program, are increasingly boosting their chance to prove strong competent in the world market.

This was stated at a ceremony held on Friday at the TK international building where five construction companies audited in March and April 2008 were awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certificates.

The five are in addition to other eight companies engaged in the construction and architecture sector USBP got issued the ISO 90 01:2000s in a similar event last month.

Thus, Africawit Building contractor PLC, Afri consult, Afro Tsion Construction, Fintstone engineering and SUR construction were received ISO certification on ceremony that held on April 4, 2008 SUR construction is the largest among the five which received the award on Friday.

SUR, a construction company engaged in road construction, building, hydropower, irrigation and other construction businesses in most regions of Ethiopia.

The company currently runs 18 projects through out the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Ali Asghar Shah, Deputy General Manger of SUR Construction emphasized that ISO certification was now mandatory to engage and run any business and to compete with others.

Ali said he agreed that quality management system enables companies, construction or not, to be in a position to work fro the utmost satisfaction of clients, by ensuring effective production, minimized cost, higher job satisfaction and moral for staff.

Being issued the ISO certificate means that the company takes a systematic approach to quality management and it is seen by many clients as a proof that they will receive products or services that satisfy their expectation.

The concept of integrating ISO-9001-2000 quality management standards in Technical, Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) colleges throughout Ethiopia was presented by two experts on the area.

Dr. Girma Tadese, one of the experts, said most businesses in the country were run through traditional management system which "is not based on quality of production or services." He said the new management system was very helpful, not only for big and multi million birr companies, but also for small shops.
