Ethiopia: Foundation Marks Book Week to Promote Reading

The Ethiopian Book for Children's and Educational Foundation (EBCEF), a local NGO promoting quality education and reading among children is celebrating the 5th Ethiopian children's book week starting from April 1-7, 2008 at Sholla library.
According to Yohanes Gebregeorgis, founder and executive director of EBCF, the foundation special programs will run through the whole week of Ethiopian children's book.
On the opening day of the book week, 1000 breads and books were distributed to children who at the time were using the resources of the Sholla children's library including others invited to mark the occasion A variety of programs that entertain children were performed as part of the book week He added that children read stories of Hans Christian Anderson during International Children's book day celebrated on April 2 and performed a play "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Hans Christian Anderson.
According to Yohannes, four newly published books were also launched. Those are two bilingual and two trilingual, entitled "The elephant and the cock" written in English and Amharic, "The Fig Tree" also written in English-Amharic-Oromifa and Tigrigna and "The Brave Chicos" English- Amharic book.
The book entitled "The elephant and the cock" is a story collected from Gambella, Benishangul, Ormiya and SNNPR regions and after six months.
A second volume that includes stories from Amhara, Tigray and Afar will be launched in due time, Yohannes told The Daily Monitor.
EBCEF also organized a walk, the starting point of which was Sholla library, Lanicha, behind the main Dashen bank upto the main post office from 08:30am to 10:00am.

The conclusion of the book week will be the inauguration of the newly opened library.
