Liberia: RIA On Removal of Illegal Occupants

7 April 2008

The Management of the Roberts International Airport says it is determined to give a renewed facelift to the nation's only international airport, the RIA, by removing all illegal occupants on its site who have refused to be relocated.

According to a press release issued in Monrovia on Tuesday, the RIA management said that it has rejected claims by squatters on a local community radio station that it was illegally evicting them.

The RIA Management said the eviction exercise was a result of a court hearing after which a judgment was passed to make the process of their eviction to be executed.

The release said the exercise, which has already been started by the court was relaxed following an appeal made by the Superintendent of the County, Levi Z. Paih who requested the court to give the squatters a one-week grace period.

The RIA Management said the eviction of squatters on the site of the airport by the court was necessary in order to help give the airport a befitting look in line with international standards.

In the release, the RIA further stated that, despite efforts by the current management team to shape the airport to international standard, the construction of individual make-shift structures were posing serious problem to its beautifications thus making the airport to remain undeveloped.

With this ugly situation, the release noted, the Management of the Roberts International Airport remains undaunted in the eviction exercise of those squatters who have consistently refused to adhere to several notices from the Management for relocation.
