At least 2,651 firearms of various calibres were voluntarily handed over to the National Police over the last seven days by citizens who illegally possessed them in Angola's southern Huila province.

Angop learnt on Monday from the spokesman for the National Police in the region, superintendent Lourenço Paciência, who added that among the weapons just handed over are 358 AKM, 1000 pistols, 366 loaders and 927 ammunitions.

During the said period, the provincial command of Huila's National Police carried out an operation on the outskirts of Lubango city that resulted in the seizure of 46 AKM, corresponding number of loaders and 204 ammunitions.

The police officer added that the process of seizure of firearms will continue, appealing to citizens in their illegal possession to voluntarily hand them over to the National Police.
