A 42 year old man, Mr. Saikou Barrow of Bakoteh, has alleged that he was assaulted by a soldier of The Gambia Armed Forces, thereby inflicting an injury on his eye lid and causing him a swollen face. Mr. Barrow stated that the alleged incident happened at his own compound on the night of Sunday, March 30.
According to Mr. Barrow, the incident occurred at around mid night when he heard a sound of somebody jumping into his compound. He explained that he went out to find out who could enter into his compound like that at that time of the night. Barrow said that that he saw a young man standing in the compound; that when he asked the man to leave he (the man) hit him on his face. Barrow said that as the suspect attempted to flee from the scene he alerted his neighbours who recognized and identified him as Ebrima Sawaneh (alias "seyfo") who also doubles as the Armed Forces football team goal-keeper. Mr. Barrow said he lodged his complaint at the Military Police (MP) at the Yundum Barracks. He said that the suspect was called and both of them gave their statements.
The Army Spokesperson, Captain Alagie Sanneh, told Foroyaa that as far as the matter has been reported to the Military Police they will handle the matter and mount a proper investigation into the allegation. Captain Sanneh indicated that if the allegations are found to be true, the matter will be forwarded to the Military Headquarters and that the soldier will be disciplined accordingly. He added that the complainant will be informed about the actions taken against the suspect.
