Mr. Alan Doss, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC, met the humanitarians and NGOs working in the province of North Kivu on 4 April 2008, where he explored with them the possibilities for their involvement in the implementation of the Amani programme, the mixed technical commission on peace and security in the Kivu provinces.
"As you know, NGOs are very important in delivering social services to the population. They are very present on the ground, and their humanitarian actions are remarkable. And thus, they have a very important role to play in the implementation of the Amani programme activities," he said.
"The programme is a big step which puts us on the road to the consolidation of peace. But, it is necessary to say and it should be recognised that there is still much to do. There will be undoubtedly very intense discussions within the framework of the Amani programme, in order to go forward with the peace process which was outlined in the Goma Acts of Engagement."
OCHA representative Gloria Fernando said that the whole of the humanitarian community is ready to support the objectives of the Amani programme, with development and rebuilding projects in both Kivus. But she demanded of the various armed groups, including the FARDC, to respect their engagements, so that the various projects in favour of the populations can be implemented.
