Jinja — President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the office of the RDC and the police to take action against microfinance institutions that have been defrauding people.

"Police should arrest all proprietors of these thieving micro finance institutions and Saccos," he said.

" Approach the RDC. The RDC will work with other security agencies and get these thieves."

Mr Museveni issued the directive on Friday evening while appearing on a talk show on 89.4 NBS FM. He advised residents to only borrow from Saccos and financial institutions in which the government has a stake, saying that it is those that the government can rein in when they try to charge high interest rates.

The President also promised that the government will start paying LC1 officials a salary when the coffers increase.

Earlier on at a rally in Butagaya Sub-county, Mr Museveni thanked the people of Kagoma County and Bugabula South for having voted FDC stalwarts Dr Frank Nabwiso and Ms Salaamu Musumba out of Parliament.

He blamed them for the belated commencement of work on the Bujagali hydro power project by opposing it during the term of the 6th Parliament.

Dr Nabwiso, however, was not a member of the 6th parliament.

Mr Museveni said the government was forced to divert billions of money for other programmes to address the electricity power crisis that hit the country.

He said the money was meant for the rural electrification programme.

"We have spent a lot of money in buying expensive diesel instead of using the water that God gifted us with," he said.

Mr Museveni said the National Resistance Movement government has enabled the economy to flourish.
