Nigeria: Western Delta Varsity Takes Off in Oghara

A First-rate private University, Western Delta University, WDU, licensed by the Federal Government in May 2007 takes-off with 574 students at Oghara, Ethiope-West Council area of Delta State.

The University which will undertake research on the peculiar biodiversity and socio-economic resources of the Niger Delta region is being promoted by an industrialist and Insurance broker, Mr. Dere Otubu with the Urhobo Advancement Forum, UAF, a group of Urhobo academics and investors in the education industry as co- promoter.

In a press conference, weekend, at Oghara, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Gbewa Hugbo said UAF would set up educational institutions to empower Nigeria and Africa with knowledge and technological skills to be competitive in the era of new globalisation.

Besides, it will promote the idea of a University as a community of scholar and students who will critically engage the special features of the Niger Delta wetland dynamics as one of the world's recognised biodiversity hotspots.
