Cameroon: Abah Abah, Olanguena Spend Eight Days in Police Dragnet

Investigations continue at the Judicial Police station..

Eight days have gone by since Polycarpe Abah Abah, former Minister of the Economy and Finance, Urbain Olanguena Awono, former Minister of Public Health and other senior State workers were arrested for suspected mismanagement of State funds. The two members of government continue to help the police in the investigation. The question on the lips of those concerned in the case is whether the suspects will be taken to court today or one of these days.

To one of Polycarpe Abah Abah's lawyers, Barrister Nouga, keeping his client at the police station for eights days goes against the law. In fact, he qualifies it as illegal. That notwithstanding, the barrister told Cameroon Tribune yesterday that his client was quite collaborative in helping the police in the investigation but that no specific charge was made on him at the time of his arrest. "This was illegal", he said, expressing the hope that his client could be taken to court after this period.

The investigation is taking place both at the police station and the various homes of the suspects. The lawyers at their defence are spending sleepless nights putting bits and pieces together to ensure a serene defence of their clients. The attempts at getting the lawyers say with exactitude the charges that have been brought before their clients have so far ended on the rocks. "I cannot give you the information on this because it is against the ethics of the profession", is the answer given to us by barrister Nouga.

Meantime, informed sources at the Judicial Police say Augustin Frédéric Kodock, former minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development was expected at the station yesterday. The source did not give any further details.
