Mozambican President Armando Guebuza criticised on Monday those who say that the current government is doing nothing to improve people's living conditions.
Addressing a rally at the Maputo neighbourhood of Mahotas to mark Mozambican Women's Day, he stressed "there are some people who are trying to convince others that nothing has been happening in the country, and that everything remains the same".
He said that the argument behind this kind of thinking is the high cost of living. "In our electoral manifesto we put at the top of the agenda the fight against poverty, because we understood that people do not have enough resources to lead a decent life", said Guebuza. "To say that the cost of living is high is not news to anyone".
He added that there will never be a time when there are no problems, Today's problems will be solved, but new problems will emerge in the future.
"We must be convinced that we can defeat poverty", declared Guebuza, to the applause of his audience.
Among the achievements of his government, Guebuza mentioned the expansion of the education and health networks, the creation of new jobs, particularly at district level, and the allocation of funds for local development in the rural areas.
Guebuza said that in the face of the current challenges, including poverty and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the government counts on the active participation of women. He said that it is their task to convey messages to society about the need for courage to face the existing problems.
Mozambican Women's Day marks the anniversary of the death, in 1971, of one of the heroines of Mozambique's independence struggle, Josina Machel. Guebuza praised her courage and determination, noting that she turned down a scholarship in Sweden in order to continue her work taking care of sick Mozambican children and soldiers in FRELIMO bases, in the areas in the north of the country that had already been liberated from colonial rule. He lamented her tragically early death from illness at the age of 25.

Guebuza also paid tribute to the many other Mozambican women contributing to the development of the country. "Mozambican women are not being emancipated by anybody else", he declared. "They are the stars that illuminate this land of heroes".
