Angola: Namibe - Over 5,000 Youths Win Jobs

9 April 2008

Namibe — A total of 5,000 youths aged between 18 and 35 years joined the job market in Angola's southern Namibe province, since 2004 to now, following a contest launched by local government, Angop learned

The youths that won their first job have joined such sectors as education, health, public administration and justice in various districts and communes of the province.

The Namibe vocational training centre has from the year 2000 trained 360 youths, whereas the Tombwa district integrated centre trained 157 youths from 2005 until now, in computing, accounting and management, electricity, locksmith, carpentry and sewing.

The headmistress of Namibe training institution, Terezinha do Menino Jesus, told Angop the newly trained youths will be referred to the Ministry of Public Administration, Employment and Social Security (Mapess) for their integration in the work market.

"We have been receiving many requests from different companies linked to the civil construction sector and according to the vacancies we select the candidates and send them to various work sectors," the source emphasised.

The official added that in Namibe, the courses most sought for are electricity, plumbing and bricklaying. The training takes between three to six months.

Some beneficiaries contacted by Angop said that the provincial government is concerned about youths' vocational training, mainly in the districts of the province.

The province's arts and vocational training institute controls five centres.
