Mbanza Kongo — The works of rehabilitation and expansion of Mbanza Kongo airport runway, in Angola's northern Zaire province, will cost the Angolan government Usd 10 million.
The information was released by the head of the department of works and infrastructures maintenance of the National Company of Airport Exploration and Air Navigation (Enana), José Luís Coelho.
Speaking on the fringes of the ceremony of award of the undertaking by the Public Works minister, Higino Carneiro, he added that the works are intended to adapt the runway to the new fleet of the Angolan airlines, TAAG, comprising of Boeing 737-800 and 777-200 airplanes.
The Chinese company "China Road and Bridge Corporation" will carry out the works, starting in May this year, over a six months period.
According to José Coelho, the works will consist in extending the runway to 2,730 metres, against the actual 1,800 metres of length. It will also be enlarged from 30 to 45 metres.
The official underlined that recycling works will be carried out, coupled with the construction of airplane taxiing and parking grounds.
The source who would not set a deadline, said there are plans to move the Mbanza Kongo airport from its actual location, the reason why only small repair works are being carried out on it.
The official would not add details about the jobs the repair of the runway will produce. The Public Works minister, Higino Carneiro, also awarded other works under the National Reconstruction Programme meant for a new image to the province and improved living of the local population.
