Monrovia — The World Health Organization has donated a consignment of medical supplies to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
The supplies include health kits, mental health drugs and laboratory reagents.
Presenting the items, WHO Country Director to Liberia Dr. Eugene Nyarko said the drugs were in fulfillment of a promise made by the Regional Director of WHO Dr. Luis G. Sambo during his visit to Liberia in 2006.
Dr. Nyarko said during the WHO Regional Director's visit, he toured the facilities of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Redemption Hospital, Island Hospital, among others, in a bid to familiarize himself with the situation of health care delivery at those facilities.
He said the drugs, valued at USD120, 000, was among WHO's initiatives to strengthen health care services in Liberia.
Dr. Nyarko said the Ministry of Health through the Mental Health Program requested WHO to assist in supplying an emergency stock of mental health drugs to avoid a stock out.
He hoped the drugs would meet some of the needs of approximately 500 mental health patients.
The health kits and laboratory reagents, he said, are intended to help strengthen the capacity of the various hospitals and laboratories in the country.
He also hoped that the items would facilitate the timely delivery of health services and eventually enhance the development of the national health care delivery system.
For his part, Health Minister Dr. Walter Gwenigale commended WHO for the gesture.
He said the donation came at a time when the need for drugs was very high in Liberia, and assured that they would use the items wisely.
