10 April 2008

Windhoek — Yesterday Standard Bank once again reiterated its commitment towards art and culture in Namibia by supporting the Unam Visual Arts Department with an amount of N$105000.

The money was handed over to the head of the Unam Visual Arts Department, Professor Herklaas Viljoen, by Standard Bank's Managing Director Mpumzi Pupuma., who explained that N$55 000 is for bursaries and the remaining N$50 000 for much needed materials, exhibitions and fashion parades.

"Education, as you all know, is our passion and to be able to provide our youngsters with the tools to educate themselves is a pleasure. We sponsor the visual arts students towards their training to prepare them for the demands of the arts industry, where they will either find employment in a range of options such as fashion and textile design, graphic artists in the advertising industry, art teachers, cultural officers or where they will be young entrepreneurs such as independent visual artists or designers who may in turn be employers themselves.

"This would be our ultimate goal - to see these students succeed and join the ranks of employed Namibians," the bank MD said.

In his opinion, Standard Bank has always viewed culture, education and art as one of the most important bricks of civilization.

"Art plays a vital role in educating, informing and challenging the poverty of the mind. Our bank respects the fact that the arts is a powerful means of communication, reaching across all divides. We are proud to be part of the arts, offering essential support to grow the sector and, with it, our country's unique identity and sense of self," he said.
