Windhoek — The American ambassador Dennise Mathieu yesterday launched the Boys' Component of her Girls' Scholarship Program (AGSP) at the Oanob Primary School in Rehoboth.
The deputy Minister of Education, Dr Becky Ndjoze-Ojo, officiated at the launch of the new programme on behalf of the Government.
In a statement it was said that over the next year, the AGSP Boys' Component will support a total of 200 boys in grades 1 through 7 by paying for school uniforms, school supplies, boarding and lodging fees, and mentoring. The support is meant to help boys succeed in school and move on to the next level of education.
The inclusion of boys builds on the success and the promise of the Ambassadors' Girls' Scholarship Program, which was initiated three years ago.
"Each year the program assists 950 girls in grades 1 through 7 to go to school, stay in school and do well in school. Last year, the United States Government initiated the AGSP Plus program under which 545 girls are helped to continue beyond grade 7 and attend grades 8 through 12.
"The American people are pleased to support these programs that are helping talented Namibian boys and girls to succeed in school," the press release said.
Since 2007, the US Government, through USAID has provided N$412 million under its partnership with the Ministry of Education to help improve the quality of education, support the education of orphans and vulnerable children and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education system in the country.
