South Africa: High Commission Protests Harassment of Nigerians in South Africa

Lagos — The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg yesterday protested "the unwarranted incessant harassment and brutalisation" of Nigerians by the South African police.

"We must confess that the incessant harassment, intimidation and brutalisation of Nigerians by the South African police on the streets without any provocation is worrisome," Consul in charge of community relations at the Consulate, Mr. Chris Iruala, said at a stakeholders meeting called to discuss the issue "I am at pains to inform this gathering that Nigerians have been experiencing constant harassment, intimidation and brutalisation from the police," he said. He said although the Consulate would not support any form of criminality and would ensure that Nigerians obey constitutued authority it would, however, want to see equity and fairness in the treatment of any Nigerian. "I must say that the recent unwarranted shootings without provocation of Nigerians on the streets is something that has become worrisome to the Nigerian government," Iruala said.

He said in the last few weeks the Consulate had recorded about fives cases of shootings involving Nigerinas. He, however, commended the South African government for organising the meeting, saying it would afford Nigerians to make input and express their feelings and suggest solutions to the problem.
