A man was brutally killed by unknown assailants at his rented house in Boyei Ward last Thursday morning.

The attackers smashed the door to enter the house and stabbed him with a sharp instrument. The victim died outside his neighbours' home where he tried to seek help. Apparently, its two female occupants were too scared to open the door for him but instead called the police by cell phone.

Some police officers arrived several hours late and denied ever receiving a call at around 0200hours when the deceased was attacked. Maun Station Commander Robson Maleka has vowed to take disciplinary measures against any police officers who might have received, the call but failed to attend to the emergency promptly.

"There is no indication that a report was received at around 2am; so we have now sought the assistance of a mobile phone company to verify. If it is confirmed a report was received we are going to take disciplinary action against the officers concerned," Maleka said.

The deceased was stabbed with a sharp instrument, most probably a knife, which was found next to the body, according to the station commander. He stated that the murder was not a ritual killing.

Maleka revealed that the deceased hailed from Molepolole and worked at the Department of Water Affairs. The body was flown to Gaborone for post- mortem on Monday morning. No one has been arrested in connection with the killing. Maleka has appealed to members of the public with any information about the incident to contact the police so the killers could be brought to book as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Maun traffic Police boss Bigboy Tieze said a boy aged 13 was knocked down by a taxi on Sunday near the Engen Filling Station at new mall. The boy was admitted to Maun General Hospital for shock and minor injuries. The taxi driver was fined P1,000 for careless driving and given 14 days to pay.

Tieze expressed concern at reckless drivers who cause accidents. Recently, a total of 73 drivers were nabbed for driving without a driver's licence while 10 were arrested for drunken driving. The police charged 17 drivers and fined them P200 for using cell phones while driving. Another 105 motorists were charged for not using seatbelts and 68 for speeding.

Asst Supt Tieze appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving and always obey traffic rules to avoid road accidents. "We always advise drivers to change their behaviour for the better and be considerate to other road users," he said. He said so far only one fatal road accident has been reported in the district since the beginning of this year.
