Two former Zimbabwean magistrates who were practising law in Maun have abandoned their respective legal practices.

The two are Walter Chikanda, a former Gantsi magistrate, and Ntsikelelo Mafa Moyo, a Maun magistrate.

Law Society of Botswana (LSB) executive administration officer Bernard Bogosi disclosed that Chikanda of Chikanda Attorneys has failed to comply with LSB regulations since last year. "Chikanda has not been practising law since last year. He has since been removed from the roll of practising attorneys by the Registrar and Master of the High Court." Bogosi said the LSB is in the process of applying for an order at the High Court to place the firm under curatorship. He revealed that anything to do with trust accounts, the curator's report would guide the LSB. The LSB has been receiving calls from Chikanda's former clients regarding their files.

Last Thursday when Bogosi was in Maun, he could not find any file at Chikanda's office. "There are no files at his office. We do not know where he kept them." Just like Chikanda, his compatriot Moyo who was practising under the name and style N Mafa Moyo Attorneys, has abandoned law practice and the LSB does not know his whereabouts.

Moyo made headlines when his contract as Maun magistrate was not renewed two years back and left the Botswana judicial system under a cloud. Bogosi revealed that Moyo started practising as a private attorney towards the end of last year. The LSB is also inundated with calls from Moyo's former clients. His legal practice would also be placed under curatorship.
