Liberia: UP Youths Threaten Legal Suit Against Plan Truth

10 April 2008

Monrovia — The Progressive Youth for the Transformation of the ruling Unity Party is calling on some print media institutions in the country to double check their information and properly balance their information before publication for the sake of transparency.

In a release issued late yesterday, the youth said their attention has been drawn to a particular publication in one of the local dailies, The Plain Truth Newspaper, which reported in its Tuesday, April 8 2008 Vol. 5# 17, edition under the headline: "UP Recruits Armed Robbers As Partisan; Prepares For 2011 Elections".

The youth said in the statement that it considers the story as a complete mirage that has the propensity to bring the party to public ridicule.

The youth added that the publication was intended to undermine the good image of the party and further threaten the security of the state.

The youth called on partisans of the party across the country to remain calm, steadfast and focus as the party begins to gear up for its reform exercise.

The youth urged the Publisher of the paper to retract the story and apologize for the dissemination of what they called, "falsehood and misguided information," published about the party. The youth said the retraction should be done with in 48 or else they will be left with no alternative but to institute a lawsuit against the paper.

Meanwhile, the progressive youth wishes to make it emphatically clear that there exists no division within the party as is being perceived by anti democratic elements.

In another development, the progressive youth for the transformation of the ruling Unity party has commended President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for what it said, were the level of progress thus far in the country under the Up government.

They said there basis social services are being restored such as, the emergency power supply, road rehabilitation, the provision of pipe borne water coupled with the increment of civil servants salary, debt waiver; renovation of market building as well as the free and compulsory free primary education for among others.
