A press statement issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on behalf of Dr. Luis G. Sambo (WHO Regional Director for Africa), quotes him as saying, "I am delighted to donate this consignment of assorted Essential Drugs, Health Kits, Mental Health Drugs and Laboratory Reagents to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare." The release said.

The donation is valued at over US$120,000. Amongst other things, the press statement said, "These Essential Drugs were promised by the Regional Director in 2006 when he visited Liberia. He pledged his support to the government of Liberia in achieving its millennium development goals.

At the time, Dr. Sambo toured the facilities of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Redemption Hospital and the Island Clinic amongst others, in a bid to familiarize himself with the situation on health care delivery at trhe4se facilities. This donation is among WHO initiatives to strengthen health care services in Liberia".

A short while ago, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through the Mental Program urgently requested WHO to assist in supplying an emergency stock of mental health drug to avoid a stock out. We understand there are approximately 400-500 patients are on mental health drugs care services in the country and we hope these drugs will meet some of their needs.

The health kits and laboratory reagents are intended to help strengthen the capacity of the various hospitals and laboratories in the country. It is my hope that these drugs and supplies will facilitate the timely delivery of health services and eventually enhance the development of the national health care delivery system.
