Angola: Huambo - Malaria Claims Over 1,000 Lives

Huambo — At least 1,758 people died of malaria in 2007 in different health units of the central Huambo province, said a source with the institution.

According to epidemiological news bulletin, submitted Thursday at the opening ceremony of the 8th Broad Consultative Council of the Provincial Health Department, the deaths are the result of 543,530 cases of diseases diagnosed. About 961 other cases of mortality are related to 18 cases of diseases, with highlight to acute diarrhoea, respiratory diseases and tuberculosis.

During the meeting, the local vice-governor for economic and social sector, Deolindo Barbosa, praised the health professionals engagement focussed on reducing the mortality rate in the province, through programme on prevention and fight against constant diseases.

The provincial health network is made up of 10 hospitals, 51 health centres and 101 posts, guaranteed by some 2,030 personnel, and 78 doctors, including 20 Angolan citizens.
