Abuja — President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has called for accelerated action on the establishment of a Gulf of Guinea Guard Force to provide additional security for members of the Gulf of Guinea Commission and their energy resources.

He made the call during bilateral talks with President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, calling for an urgent meeting of the Commission's Ministerial Council to work out modalities for the establishment of the Force.

Yar'Adua said that Heads of State of the Commission should meet soon afterwards to ratify the recommendations of the ministerial council for implementation.

He assured President Mbasogo that Nigeria will continue to make significant contributions towards ensuring peace, security and political stability in the West African sub-region and the Gulf of Guinea.

He added that Nigeria will respond positively to Guinean government request for more bilateral cooperation with Equatorial Guinea on security matters and in other areas.

A ministerial delegation from Equatorial Guinea is to visit Nigeria soon to follow up on the talks between both leaders.
