Kenya: Two Years After Marsabit

11 April 2008

Nairobi — Marsabit and Moyale residents commemorated the second anniversary of the plane crash that killed 14 people, including six MPs.

Family and friends of the deceased and residents gathered at Kofia Mbaya - the crash site - to pray and raise a peace flag.

Former North Horr legislator's widow, Mrs Sarah Godana, urged Kenyans to embrace peace in memory of the lawmakers who died while on a peace mission for Northern Kenya.

Present were the late Abdi Sasura's widow and a brother to Abdullahi Adan, former East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) MP.

Godana, who is an Eala MP, said Kenyans should learn from past mistakes and live in harmony.

Said she: "We need to learn from our past mistakes like the killings in Turbi and stop fighting each other. We should live in peace and harmony."

For the past two years, Marsabit and Moyale districts have enjoyed peace.

Previously, cattle rustling and banditry attacks were common.

Following the deaths of Guracha Galgalo, Bonaya Godana, Abdi Sasura, Titus Ngoyoni and Abdullahi Adan, grassroots peace committees were formed to spread peace messages among warring communities and clans.

The cross border attacks have also been reduced after security was beefed up since 2006.

Marsabit OCPD, Mr Francis Sang, in an interview with The Standard, said cattle rustling had reduced.

He praised the locals for identifying rustlers.

Two years ago, a plane carrying a peace delegation to Marsabit crashed, killing 14 people.

Only three passengers survived the accident, including the Eastern Provincial Commissioner, Mr Patrick Osare.

An Assistant Commissioner of Police, who was also the Eastern Provincial Police Officer, Mr Thomas Chigambo, was among the victims.
