A 42-year old man accused of rape has been denied bail because his identity remains a puzzle. Appearing before Broadhust magistrate Pako Ralehika-Phiri, state prosecutor Thabo Malambane made an application for 'Lucky Maripe' to be remanded in custody because investigations were still ongoing as the accused was trading under three identities.

'Maripe' is a Botswana citizen whose identity card was issued last year and who claims to have been born in Mmopane while his mother, who helped him with the application, is from Nlakhwane. The state also says 'Maripe' is a registered South African citizen from Limpopo of ID No. 4811082497082 and going by the name of 'Samson Mdabo'. Still in South Africa, the state says it has information that the same person is known as 'Dr M.S Yakjaly'. Although evidence is yet to be led in court, the accused is alleged to have raped Tiny Molefe when she contacted him for a traditional healing session. The state alleges a clear act of 'sexual fraud' as 'Maripe' is said to have seduced Molefe on February 11 in Gaborone under the pretext that he was performing some healing ritual. It is reported that the victim was tricked into believing that the ritual required him ('Maripe') to insert his medicine only by penetrating Molefe. After the act, the accused is said to have told Molefe that she was not healed. Upon realising that she had been tricked, the victim reported the matter to the police.

Ralehika-Phiri has ordered the accused to appear for another mention on April 23, saying she could not grant the accused bail because his true identity was central to the state's case. She told the accused that there was also the possibility that he might abscond. Still in Broadhust, Joel Mbuku's case could not go on because there was no interpreter. Mbuku, a Zimbabwean national, is facing two counts of armed robbery.

On the first count, the accused is alleged to have robbed Juliet Bangano of a cellphone valued at P999.00 and P232 in cash, threatening her with an axe. The accused said that he did not understand English or Setswana because he is of Shona speaking origin. The accused has also been charged with robbing Memory Mangwere violently.
