Lagos — President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has called for accelerated action on the establishment of a Gulf of Guinea Guard Force to provide additional security for members of the Gulf of Guinea Commission and their energy resources.

The president who made the call while speaking at bilateral talks with President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, also called for an urgent meeting of the Commission's Ministerial Council to work out modalities for the establishment of the Guard Force. He said that Heads of State of the Commission should meet soon afterwards to ratify the recommendations of the ministerial council for implementation. The President assured President Mbasogo that Nigeria will continue to make significant contributions towards ensuring peace, security and political stability in the West African sub-region and the Gulf of Guinea.

He said Nigeria will respond positively to his request for more bilateral cooperation with Equatorial Guinea on security matters and in other areas. A ministerial delegation from Equatorial Guinea is to visit Nigeria soon to follow up on the talks between both leaders.
