Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebrima Jammeh, the commanding officer of the serious crime unit at police headquarters, has on Thursday, 10 April, testified in the trial of Lieutenant Bakary Camara, Superintendent Manlafi Sanyang and Domenico Fideli at the Banjul Magistrates' Court, presided over by Magistrate Kayode Olagubutu.
ASP Jammeh told the court that on 21 January 2008, he and Corporal Bakary Bojang were assigned to locate Mr. Domenico Fideli at his residence in Brufut, based on the fact that he was on the verge of selling a car, which was officially allocated to him. ASP Jammeh said that through communicating with Mr. Fideli they were able to locate where he lives in Brufut; that they requested to see the said car which he showed them; that they later questioned Mr. Fideli about his intention to sell the car. ASP Jammeh said that Mr.Fideli responded in a positive way; that they later invited Mr. Fideli to the Serious Crime office for further questioning. ASP Jammeh told the court that the said car is a "Ssanyong Korando," with registration number BJL 4063B. The key of the said car was later tendered as exhibit F.
During cross examination by counsel Sheriff Tambedou, ASP Jammeh said that there is a transfer of vehicle ownership certificate in the name of Mr. Fideli, which he said was issued by the Gambia Police Force Licensing department. ASP Jammeh admitted that the transfer document shows that Mr. Fideli owns the car and that he can do any thing with it.
It could be recalled that Lieutenant Bakary Camara, the protection officer to president Jammeh, Superintendent Sanyang, vehicle controller at State House and Domenico Fideli, an Italian architect, are standing trial for alleged stealing and conspiracy to commit felony.
