The national harmonised programme to celebrate the 36th Unity Day in Cameroon was presented yesterday at the Ministry of Youth Affairs. This was during the second 20th May preparatory meeting for the year, chaired by the Minister of Youth Affairs, Adoum Garoua.
The programme centres on four main activities: the civilian march-past coordinated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and to include a torch-light procession, socio-cultural activities, and round-table conferences which centre on the theme of celebration; "The Armed Forces and the Nation, together for the consolidation of Peace and Development". During the meeting, presidents and members of the various organising commissions were appointed. Minister Adoum Garoua told them to get to work, conceive and elaborate their plans of action which do not demand exorbitant sums of money.
Comparing this year's national harmonised programme to that of last year, the Head of Division for Planning and Cooperation, Oswarld Ayuketah Tambe, says not much innovation has been made but for emphasis on the fact that activities should centre on the theme of celebration. Thus, activities are centred on mobilising the population on the march-past, sporting and socio-cultural activities which depict the need for the population to come together and consolidate the peace and unity that reign in Cameroon. Oswarld Ayuketah Tambe also noted that activities to commemorate this year's 20th May Day have been reduced in a bid to ensure efficiency. As such, the usual mega concert which used to take place has been left out. The next 20th May preparatory meeting has been programmed for the 24th of April.
