Angola: Parliament Speaker At IPU Meeting in South Africa

Issues related to the reduction of poverty, political, economic and social situation in the world will top the 118th ordinary session of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU), slated for Saturday, in South Africa, said Friday here the Angolan Parliament speaker, Roberto de Almeida.
Addressing the press, shortly before his departure, the Angolan parliamentarian, said that the participants at the meeting will also discuss on illegal emigration issue and the parliamentary control over foreign assistance.
"The participants will elect an urgent topic for debate at the Forum", explained the Angolan speaker, adding that this requires the countries to submit, in advance, issues which deserve an urgent attention, because it is related to political matter.
Amongst the proposals for urgent topic, he quoted, are climate change, an initiative of Greece, the Humanitarian situation in Gaza and xenophobia proposed by Turkey.
The IPU was founded in 1889, by the initiative of English William Cremer and of French Frédéric Passy, whose goal was to create an organisation focussed on resolution of conflicts, under the international mediation.
According to the status, every national parliament wanting to become IPU members should join National Groups, in order to participate in the two annually plenary assemblies and in other events promoted by the institutions.

The organisation operates preferably in the areas of representative democracy, international peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, international trade and education, science and culture.
